If your vehicle is picked up on or before December 31, the IRS treats that pickup date as your donation date for this tax year—even if the car sells later. With AutoHeart in partnership with Heritage for the Blind, you can start in under two minutes, get a same‑day or next‑day tow in most of South Florida, and have your written acknowledgment mailed within 30 days of sale. You don’t need current registration, an inspection, or a running car. Just complete the quick form or call, schedule your pickup, sign the title at the curb, and your year‑end tax deduction is locked in as of the pickup date.

Year-end tax deduction facts
Dec 31 pickup sets this year’s donation date
For IRS purposes, your donation date is when the charity takes possession of the vehicle, not when it’s sold. If your car is picked up on or before December 31, the deduction applies to this tax year.
Form 1098-C for larger vehicle deductions
If your vehicle sells for more than the IRS threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098-C. This form states the gross sale price, which you’ll generally use as your deduction amount when you itemize.
Written acknowledgment within 30 days of sale
Heritage for the Blind mails your written acknowledgment or 1098-C within 30 days after your car is sold. Keep this with your records to support your deduction if the IRS ever requests documentation.
Deduction generally equals the vehicle’s sale price
In most cases, the IRS lets you deduct the amount the charity receives from selling your vehicle. Your acknowledgment or 1098-C will list that sale price for you to enter when filing your return.
Itemize on Schedule A to claim the deduction
Vehicle donations are charitable contributions. To claim them, you typically must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return, instead of taking the standard deduction. A tax pro can confirm what’s best for you.
