If your car just failed an emissions or smog test in Miami, you do not have to fix it before donating. AutoHeart, partnering with Heritage for the Blind, accepts vehicles that fail smog or emissions testing anywhere in South Florida. Whether you’re in Little Havana, Kendall, Hialeah, Miami Gardens, or down in Homestead, you can donate a failed‑smog car in its current condition and still receive a tax receipt.
Here’s how it works in Florida: a charitable donation is a title transfer, not a private sale. The smog or emissions rules that apply when you sell a used car to another person typically do not apply when you donate to a 501(c)(3) charity. AutoHeart arranges free towing, then Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle as‑is at auction or to a buyer who handles any needed repairs. You don’t pay for diagnostics, parts, or labor just to give the car away. From Brickell high‑rises to Doral warehouses and Miramar suburbs, we pick up at no cost and provide a proper IRS donation receipt so you can claim your deduction.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your failed‑smog car
Start online or by phone and share the basics: year, make, model, approximate mileage, and that it failed a smog or emissions test. Let us know where in Miami or South Florida the car is located—Wynwood, North Miami Beach, Coral Gables, or anywhere nearby—and whether it’s drivable or parked.
2. Relax—no emissions fix or inspection needed
We confirm that AutoHeart and Heritage for the Blind can accept your specific vehicle as‑is. Because this is a donation, you are not required to repair it or obtain a passing emissions certificate. Don’t spend money on parts, a mechanic, or retesting just to give the car away—we take it in its current condition.
3. Schedule your free Miami pickup
Choose a convenient pickup time that works with your schedule. Our towing partner meets you at home, work, or a shop—whether that’s in Downtown Miami, Aventura, Cutler Bay, or Pembroke Pines. Pickup is completely free, even if the car doesn’t run, won’t pass smog, or has been sitting for months.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys
At pickup, you sign the Florida title to transfer ownership to Heritage for the Blind. We’ll walk you through exactly where to sign. Because this is a charitable transfer, the same smog certificate requirements that apply to a private buyer normally don’t apply here. You keep copies for your records.
5. We sell the car as‑is and handle the rest
AutoHeart’s program arranges for the vehicle to be sold as‑is at auction or to a buyer who will take on repairs and emissions issues. You don’t negotiate with anyone, arrange repairs, or deal with retesting. Proceeds help support services for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind.
6. Receive your tax receipt and claim your deduction
After the car is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you a tax receipt. For most vehicles, you can deduct up to the sale price; donations over $500 typically use IRS Form 1098‑C. You’ve cleared a failed‑smog car from your life, helped a real Miami‑connected charity, and gained a potential tax deduction.
Potential complications to watch for
Title problems or missing Florida paperwork
Tip: If you’ve lost your Florida title or it’s still in a previous owner’s name, that can slow things down. Contact us before ordering duplicate paperwork so we can explain exactly what’s needed in Miami‑Dade or Broward and help you avoid unnecessary trips to the tax collector’s office.
Car abandoned at a shop after failing emissions
Tip: If your car is sitting at a mechanic in Doral, Hialeah, or another shop after failing emissions, we can often still pick it up. Be sure to clear any storage or repair bills directly with the shop first—towers usually can’t remove the car until those are settled or the shop releases the vehicle.
Loans, liens, or title still held by a lender
Tip: We generally can’t complete a donation if there’s an active loan or lien on the title. Check with your lender to confirm the lien is released. If you have a lien release letter but it’s not reflected on the title yet, we’ll walk you through how to document that for a smooth donation in Florida.
Plates, SunPass, and insurance after pickup
Tip: Florida expects you to handle plates and insurance properly. Remove your license plate and SunPass transponder before the tow truck leaves, then return or transfer the plate as required and call your insurer to cancel coverage. This helps you avoid future toll, parking, or insurance issues tied to the old car.
